RTM Strategy Development – Steps & Process

Although supply chain strategy development is an iterative process that can last several years in some instances, we encourage clients to complete a "fast track" process within a 13 week period. Enchange has found that if the process extends much further, something inevitably changes (e.g. the environment), and organisations can get caught is a semi-permanent analysis state, resulting in delayed strategic decisions. Even if the process unearths fundamental challenges with respect to supply chain competitive position, a "strategic reference position" will have been established.

The overall outcome of the process is the development of a ‘Viable Vision’ of the future. A viable vision is ambitious and has a clear, logical and thoroughly worked-out set of steps and actions for implementation. A strategic vision is firmly rooted in reality and provides a clear picture of where the organisation could be in the future.

The view of the organisation’s future can only be determined by focusing and fully understanding the organisation’s current reality, its environment and its customers.

Detailed plans and intermediate steps also need to be described. These plans are developed with a much higher level of detail, which can include, for example, a three year department level plan and next year’s time-scaled action plan.

Through the use of several sets of tools, Enchange is able to facilitate the development of strategic plans that not only include the integration of individual initiatives throughout the whole process, but will also ensure the consistency and viability of the overall strategy.
